WATCHMEN- Yes we're gloating, but we did tell you it'd be great

There is something of a sense of satisfaction around these parts right now. Watchmen has arrived in cinemas everywhere to critical and public acclaim, and at last everybody else is able to enjoy the story that comic geeks like us have held in such high regard for twenty years. It is a great film, no doubt about it, but its release has vindicated our claims of it being so damn good. Watchmen is the first title pretty much any comics fan will bring up when taking part in that age-old argument as to whether comics and graphic novels can be literary. They most certainly can, and on this showing they can also be the basis for incredibly cerebral and entertaining films too, not just cheesy blockbusters. Here is a story of has-beens who are getting old and fat, demented and unstable, distant from the people they swore to protect. Here is a story of psychological trauma, violence and social commentary. Here is a story that has gripped millions of readers. So you'll have to excuse us while we gloat. Comics fans have a hard time of things in the media landscape, and even though the industry has had some peaks over the past few years, the watchmen release seems set to change perceptions for a good while to come. Yeah, we did tell you so. |
