The importance of knowing your roots
By Andrew Hawnt
There is a fine balance to be struck between remaining loyal to your core audience and appealing to new visitors too. It should be imperative in every business that the core customers must be maintained while new patrons are gathered, and this is a very tricky thing to achieve. How do we do it? We listen. We talk. We welcome our visitors as friends and we get to know their tastes and their interests. We keep a staple diet of the classic titles in stock and the big names in merchandise while always trying new things that our core fanbase and our new friends may enjoy. We don't always get it right, and we're the first to admit that, but we do try to do our very best to provide interesting items for fans young and old. We're not trying to appeal to everyone, which is a great mistake of some businesses. We are trying to appeal to exactly the people that shop with us. Fans, enthusiasts, collectors, the curious and the well-versed. We're happy to discuss and advise, suggest and debate. That's part of the fun of this business. The important thing with comics, graphic novels, action figures and collectibles is that they are a niche interest with an overspill of mainstream appeal. We know that not everyone will known every tiny fact about the things we do, which is precisely why our staff are so knowledgeable on many subjects within the geek industries. We're here to help. The hard-sell approach doesn't help anyone. We're much more into interaction and making sure we can be the best for our visitors. Having the absolute best, cutting edge merchandise on offer isn't enough now. You need a human element to things too, and we're proud that we have that in abundance. Except for our pet Borg, but y'know, nobody's perfect.

Contributor's Note
Basically, we're just like anyone else with a penchant for t-shirts with superheroes on them, and sharing in-jokes about ill-fated officers in red shirts.
